Day 35: Rough Mouth

Scripture: Matthew 8:1-4; 14-15

 Soft Hands
Sometimes my words are gruff,
angered, unthought out.

 May my hands be gentle
and may I let them 
do the talking when
my mouth doesn't know 
what to say.

Why the Sulking?

Yesterday I was in one of my seminary classes and we were telling stories. One of our assignments has been to do a formalist analysis of an Old Testament story of our choosing. Someone across the room picked the Cain and Abel story. She was telling her story and when she came to this verse, I could have sworn she was looking right at me: Genesis 4:6-7   (MSG)  God   spoke to Cain: “Why this tantrum? Why the sulking? If you do well, won’t you be accepted? And if you don’t do well, sin is lying in wait for you, ready to pounce; it’s out to get you, you've got to master it.” My religious background is not heavy in the language of sin and condemnation, but this verse really hit me in the chest. I feel like lately I've been sulking. Not literally, but spiritually. No one event happened to start me on my spirit sulk, but I've just felt it lately. Second Breakfast

Today we had "Second Breakfast" at the office to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first publication of J.R.R. Tolkein's book, The Hobbit . It was a delightful affair with tea and bisquits, bangers and mash, pancakes, and hard boiled eggs. I feel so lucky to work in a place where we can have fun events like this over lunch time. We all got names of characters in the book or hobbit-esque names. This was mine: The meal reminded me of the movie coming out, though, and the movie that I used to watch when I was little. This is the hobbit that I remember: This is the new hobbit: That's a bit of a change, but I'm excited for the movie! I've still never actually read the book, though. I do feel kind of bad about that. It's one of those books that I feel everyone should read at least once. I'll add it to my list of books to read at some point. Cheerio, Rach

I dreamed a dream of ghosts and men Of things that have and should have been. I dreamed of fear and lost little girls with white frilly dresses and ghostly white curls. I dreamed she was scared and needed my help So without blinking an eye or giving a yelp I took her cold little hand and headed upstairs Underneath the noses of my peers and their glares.
